Education is the act or process of transmitting or acquiring general knowledge, improving thinking and decision-making skills, and generally cognitively preparing oneself and others. To keep our society, secure and make it a more peaceful place, education is something that is not only necessary on a personal level but also on a global level. Education helps people avoid dangerous circumstances by teaching them the difference between right and wrong.

Skill Development is the process of identifying skills gaps in people and providing them with skills training and career opportunities. Lack of sufficient education and training in today’s society limits people’s prospects for self-advancement by limiting their access to employment. This eventually precludes such persons from making a significant contribution to economic growth. As a result, sufficient education quality and training are viewed as key strategies of breaking down the poverty system.

The UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aspires to eradicate poverty and inequality while protecting the environment, focuses particularly on education and training. The fourth goal of the agenda states, “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” The advancement of technical and vocational education and training is a key component of Goal 4. By assisting youngsters and adults in developing the skills necessary for employment, respectable employment, and entrepreneurship, improving access to these talents is expected to satisfy economic, social, and environmental concerns. According to the UN, these abilities can help young people enter the workforce, launch their firms, and become more resilient in the face of a market that demands greater adaptability, hence boosting productivity and income levels. Through work-based learning, ensuring that skills acquired are identified and certified, and providing opportunities for low-skilled jobless individuals to advance their skills, they can also lower entry barriers to the world of work.

A reduction in the existing economic burden can be achieved by enabling the future working generation to acquire skills. When educational institutions move toward skill development, it can lower underemployment and unemployment, boost output, and raise living standards. When skill development is done with the intention of aiding in structural change, it inevitably leads to increased labour productivity, which makes it possible for both public and private investment in education as well as greater economic growth.

India has achieved remarkable progress in all facets of education during the previous few decades. Accessibility to schooling has significantly improved, with around 93 percent of rural families having a primary school within 1 km. In 2018, the youth literacy rate increased to 91.7 percent. However, accessibility and quality of education continue to exist as obstacles, resulting in poor learning outcomes and a general lack of trust in the public school system.

In 2015, the Prime Minister of India launched the Skill India Mission under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, with the goal of training over 40 crore people in various skills by 2022. However, the pandemic was a major setback with few alternative modes of skill acquisition, particularly for individuals who did not have access to online education due to a lack of internet, smartphones, and digital literacy.
